About James Hoffman
Outward artistic expression represents an inward window into who we are. For me, landscapes, cityscapes and scenes of nature express my reverence for natural and human creation in all of its own wild, unpredictable, ever-changing and beautiful "expression."
As I climb boulders and cross over creeks, drive over dusty, dirt roads, and old logging trails, or simply find my own paths in the world, I am acutely aware that I am indeed searching for something to capture, even if just for a fleeting moment. Once the moment arrives, I am deeply inspired to contain it, even as I eagerly wait for the expression to change before my eyes.
My nature photography is about the exchange that takes place, the gift of appreciation, patience and opportunity that I have to capture the mood and personality of what nature gives us - at her appointed time and in her appointed light. All the while, I am comforted in the reality that I leave it behind to continue its own growth, expansion and expression, perhaps to be captured again another day and in another time.
While the resulting photographs are but one expression at one moment, I remain grateful that nature has an endless parade of expressions, all beckoning me to continue in that relationship, one adventure at a time.
Much of the subject matter here represents strong ties to my birthplace in central Alabama, my lifelong memories of the southern coast, and my ongoing intrigue with the American west. It also represents a real joy for living in the mountains of my second home now, the southern Appalachians.
Perhaps more than anything, the subject matter, and my work in general, give voice to my otherwise quiet, wandering spirit that jettisons me onward across the playground of creation.
